Bethlen Miklós erdélyi kancellár magánkönyvtáráról szinte semmilyen adat nem áll rendelkezésünkre. Eddigi ismereteink szerint ő maga sosem írta össze gyűjteményét, önéletírásában pedig több helyen említi ugyan olvasmányait, de könyvek vásárlásáról vagy tulajdonlásáról csupán általánosságokban beszél.
